A good pitching ERA depends on the level of play, the pitcher’s role, and the run environment.
For MLB pitchers, an ERA under 4.00 is usually solid, under 3.00 is very good, and under 2.50 is elite. For high school and youth pitchers, the answer gets messier because defense, scorekeeping, walks, competition level, and innings pitched can change the number fast.
So yes, ERA matters.
But it’s not the whole story.
ERA tells you what happened on the scoreboard. It does not always explain why it happened. That’s where pitchers, parents, and coaches need to look deeper.
A pitcher may have a high ERA because he is walking too many hitters. Or because the defense behind him is struggling. Or because one bad inning blew up a small sample size. On the other side, a pitcher can have a low ERA and still need work if he is surviving on weak contact, great defense, or poor competition.

A 3.80 ERA in one league might be strong if the competition is high and offense is up. A 3.80 ERA in another setting might signal command issues. That’s why ERA should be compared against level, role, innings, opponent quality, and the way runs are actually scoring.
What Is a Good ERA in MLB?
In MLB, an ERA under 4.00 is generally considered solid for a starting pitcher. Under 3.00 is very good. Under 2.50 is usually elite, especially across a full qualified workload.
But MLB ERA changes by season. Some years are more hitter-friendly. Some are more pitcher-friendly. Ballparks, rule changes, baseball composition, strike zone trends, and league-wide offensive environments all matter.

As of July 7, 2026, MLB.com’s ERA leaderboard showed qualified pitchers such as Jacob Misiorowski at 1.47, Cam Schlittler at 2.01, Eduardo Rodriguez at 2.25, Chris Sale at 2.27, Chase Burns at 2.40, Yoshinobu Yamamoto at 2.49, and Max Meyer at 2.53. Those are elite-level ERA numbers because they sit well below the usual “very good” threshold.
That does not mean every pitcher needs to chase those numbers.
Those are MLB players. They’re facing the best hitters in the world, working with professional scouting reports, advanced pitch design tools, elite defense, and highly specific development plans. For a youth or high school pitcher, MLB ERA should be a reference point, not a pressure point.
Still, MLB examples can teach a useful lesson:
Elite ERA usually comes from more than “good stuff.”
It often comes from command, sequencing, limiting walks, controlling damage with runners on base, missing barrels, and staying consistent across a large workload.
That last part matters: workload.
MLB.com states that pitchers must record at least 1.0 inning pitched per scheduled league game to qualify for ERA leadership. It also notes that when MLB.com tables are sorted by rate stats like ERA, non-qualified players are hidden by default.
So when you compare MLB ERA numbers, make sure you’re not comparing a full-season starter to a reliever with a tiny sample.
Starter ERA vs. Reliever ERA

That’s why parents should be careful.
If your athlete has a high ERA, it does not automatically mean he is a bad pitcher. You need to ask better questions:
Is he throwing strikes?
Is he walking too many hitters?
Is he falling behind in counts?
Is he giving up hard contact?
Is he staying composed with runners on base?
